501 Green Sunday Plantation Drive

National Service Scheme (NSS), Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (RUAS) partnered for the "501 Green Sunday Plantation Drive" Celebration being hosted by NGO Adamya Chetana on 03rd August, 2025 at Shri Shankar Mutt Jnanakendra & Ghoshala, Kanakapura, Bengaluru South District. A total of 50 NSS RUAS Volunteers participated in the plantation drive planting a total of 501 saplingsmarking 501th Green Sunday Celebration.

This initiative aimed to enhance environmental sustainability by promoting tree planting and encouraging ecological awareness within the community. Held on Sundays, the drive motivates students, faculty, and local residents to actively participate in planting saplings across designated areas. Under “Sasyagraha Green Lifestyle Movement”, Adamya Chetana has been planting trees every Sunday for the past 10 years and over 1.5 lakh trees have been planted around Bengaluru. This collaborative effort not only seeks to mitigate urban pollution and contribute to the green cover but also to instill a sense of environmental responsibility among participants. By joining hands, NSS RUAS and Adamya Chetana aspire to create a greener, healthier environment, demonstrating the power of collective action in addressing pressing environmental challenges.

Dr. Thejaswani Ananthkumar, Chariman – Adamya Chetana Foundation described the significance of such green initiatives being organized by Adamya. She emphasized that Adamya Chetana’s Green Sunday initiative, continues to inspire communities to take grassroots action for environmental conservation. The 501st celebration spotlighted how collective action, when sustained over time, can create significant ecological and social impact. She even highlighted the importance of avoiding single-use plastics, preserving native biodiversity, and creating carbon sinks through community afforestation.

Dr. T .V. Ramachandra, Ph.D. (IISc), FIE, FNIE, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring address underscoring the critical need for environmental stewardship in today’s world. He passionately emphasized the importance of creating widespread awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability, particularly among the younger generation. Highlighting the urgent need to eliminate single-use plastics, he elaborated on their detrimental impact on soil health, biodiversity, and long-term ecological balance. Dr. Ramachandra called for collective and conscious efforts to adopt sustainable alternatives in daily life. He lauded initiatives like the Green Sunday Drive, describing it as a transformative step towards community-driven environmental action. Commending the spirit of the campaign, he urged youth to actively participate and emerge as Green Warriors, leading the movement for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
