Overview
A Ph.D. in Nursing Sciences is a research-oriented academic degree aimed at enhancing excellence and scholarship in nursing practice. It takes quite a long time to complete, ranging between 3-5 years, focusing on areas such as clinical research, health policy, nursing education, and healthcare innovation, among others. The programme provides students with the opportunity to impact healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes based on evidence-based research.
Students undertake intense research, mostly with the sponsorship of faculty advisors, to address topics related to vital issues in nursing and healthcare. The skills learned during the programme serve as effective tools for progression in academia, research centres, health organisations, or federal state health ministries.
Graduates from the Ph.D. programme are competent to perform leadership roles in conducting research activities, formulating national and global health policies, and simplifying nursing practice. The M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences provides the programme to those who seek advanced knowledge in the field of nursing science.
Eligibility Criteria
Relaxation for Women and Persons with Disabilities:
- Women candidates and those with more than 40% disability may get a 2-year relaxation in the Ph.D. maximum duration.
- Women candidates may also receive Maternity/Child Care Leave for up to 240 days during their Ph.D.
Leave for Student Exchanges:
Leave is allowed from the second year onwards if it contributes significantly to the thesis completion.
- Research expeditions (less than one month): Approved by the supervisor and head of the department.
- Research missions (more than one month): Proposed by the department and approved by the Research Advisory Committee for work in National/International research labs or Centres of Excellence.
- Exchange programmes: Proposed by the department and approved by the Research Advisory Committee for work in institutions in India or abroad.
Selection Process
Selection for admission to the Ph.D. programme will involve a written test called the Ramaiah Research Programme Entrance Test (RRPET), followed by an interview focused on the research topic and evaluation of basic knowledge. The merit list of eligible candidates will be prepared based on the combined scores from:
- The written test (RRPET). The interview. The candidate's previous academic performance.
The relative weights of these components will determine the final selection for admission into the Ph.D. programme.
FAQs
A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme of study in Nursing Sciences indeed involves the development of research to inform advanced knowledge and practice nursing through scientific investigation. Students should expect a start for initiating original research that may lead to innovations in health care with regard to the recovery of patients. Most graduates of this programme find work in academia, in leading research, or in leadership positions within health care.
The areas of concentration are clinical research, healthcare policy, nursing education, and health innovation. Students tend to do research on improving patient care practices, management of health systems, public health, and evidence-based practice in nursing.
Graduates may teach in universities and colleges, work in healthcare organisations as leaders in clinical practice, and help formulate policy or conduct research with government agencies, international health agencies, or private research institutes.
The PhD in Nursing Sciences can take 3-5 years, depending on the nature of the pursuit and whether one is doing a service-based job or research work. Some programmes facilitate adjusting the timelines to accommodate professional obligations.
