Overview
A PhD in Art and Design is a doctoral programme focused on research and creative practice within the creative and cultural industries. This programme is intended for individuals who would like to take up advanced research within the art and design fields together with theory and practice analysis. It allows scholars to develop new knowledge and practice in visual arts, graphic and industrial design fashion, multimedia and other related disciplines.
The PhD coursework and research primarily blend theory with practice, enabling scholars to analyse art and design creatively, historically, and within modern contexts. Researchers enhance their professional expertise and deepen their understanding of various art forms while also addressing challenges faced by artists in the creative process. Common research areas include sustainability, new media, culture and technology, graphic design, and interdisciplinary work.
Eligibility Criteria
Indian Nationals
To be eligible for admission to the PhD programme, candidates must have secured a minimum of 55% in a master’s degree in their chosen area of specialisation. Additionally, applicants are required to pass a written test and/or, if conducted by the University’s Research and Innovation Council (RIC), an interview that includes a topic presentation and a basic review. A score meeting or exceeding the stipulated minimum is mandatory for admission.
International Students
Candidates should possess a minimum Master’s degree qualification, which should be as per the recognition by the Association of Indian Universities in the concerned discipline and equivalent thereto. They also require English proficiency demonstration. The certification for English language proficiency is not required if the candidate has pursued a Master’s degree programme where English is the medium of instruction. For that, however, the RIC may occasionally determine additional rules governing the enrolment of research students studying from a foreign country.
