Overview

In the current era, the increasing complexities of healthcare and the heightened focus on patient safety globally have created a rising demand for pharmacists proficient in clinical practice areas such as medication reconciliation, patient counseling, and pharmacovigilance. These pharmacists play a vital role in managing medication therapy, ensuring appropriate drug use, and reducing the risk of adverse reactions. Their expertise in patient counseling helps enhance medication adherence and understanding, leading to better health outcomes. Additionally, pharmacists collaborate with other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive care plans, addressing the multifaceted needs of patients with chronic and acute conditions. This advanced training is essential to meet the evolving demands of the healthcare system and improve overall patient care.

The Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm) in Pharmacy Practice program addresses a critical need within the healthcare system by preparing pharmacists to play a pivotal role in patient care and excel in various aspects of clinical pharmacy and healthcare delivery. With a strong emphasis on patient care, research, and practical training, this program equips pharmacy professionals with the skills necessary to contribute effectively to the healthcare system and improve patient outcomes.

The students will undergo clinical postings in various clinical departments of Ramaiah Medical College Hospital and thereby receive experiential learning to enhance the clinical pharmacy skills. Postgraduate students will engage in clinical rotations across different departments at Ramaiah Medical College Hospital, gaining hands-on experience to improve their clinical pharmacy skills. This program addresess the evolving role of pharmacists in improving patient outcomes, making it ideal for those aspiring to contribute significantly to the advancement of pharmacy practice and patient centred health care delivery.

 

Program Objectives

  • Foster the ability to provide pharmaceutical care, including patient assessment, care planning, and follow-up to optimize therapeutic outcomes
  • Develop advanced clinical pharmacy skills, including medication therapy management, drug information services, and patient counselling
  • Enhance research competency through training in systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other research methodologies relevant to pharmacy practice
  • Equip students with knowledge and skills in pharmacoeconomics, outcomes research, and health economics to evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical interventions
  • Promote ethical decision-making and professionalism in all aspects of pharmacy practice, including adherence to legal and regulatory standards
  • Provide hands-on training through clinical rotations, internships, and workshops to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have passed B. Pharm degree examinations from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India

Candidates should have secured a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent CGPA for B. Pharm for General Category

Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe background should have passed with 50% passing (as per PCI Gazette Notification dated 10.12.2014)

It is mandatory to submit a migration certificate obtained from the University where the candidate had passed their qualifying B. Pharm degree.

Application process: Via University Quota

Students seeking admission are required to appear for the entrance examination conducted by the University, including international students. This will be a Post Graduate Entrance Test (M. Pharm)

Via Government Of Karnataka Quota

Students seeking admission are required to qualify for the Postgraduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) — Bangalore, Govt. of Karnataka.

International Competitions

Students can earn 1 – 3 credits by participating in the international competitions, or with a presentation in a conference or publication in a journal that wins awards. Students can earn additionally 1 – 3 credits through participation in international competitions through technical work.

Group Project

A group of 5 students can work on a project of an interdisciplinary nature and be constituted of members from across departments. Students are required to develop a report for assessment and demonstrate the working of the project. The IPR rights of all such work lies with the University only.

Project

Students can opt for an internship in industry, business or research organization. Alternatively, students can undertake a mini-project in the hospital or community requiring self-directed study that can be perused within the affiliated faculty. It is also necessary for the student to submit a report and make a presentation to the members of the panel constituted by the HoD for assessment.

Dissertation and Publication

There are five parts to this course, a dissertation and publication. Each student has to choose a relevant topic and work individually to write the dissertation. The topic needs to be approved by the committee constituted by HoD. Publication is a stage wherein dissertation work of the student is converted into a technical paper to be published in reputed conferences/​journals.

Teaching and Assessment

During each semester, students’ performance is assessed through Continuous Evaluation (CE) which includes teacher interaction, sessional examination and a Semester End Examination (SEE).

Students are awarded grades based on the marks scored.

As per the rules of the University, the entire fee amount must be collected at the beginning of the year and cannot be paid per semester.

The Gnanagangothri Campus and the Technology Campus have well-planned hostel facilities for students. However, the on-campus accommodation at Technology Campus is currently restricted to female students only.

Students from both campuses can also opt for private, off-campus accommodation.

While the actual date varies every year, admissions for UG programmes close in the month of August, while those for PG programmes close in September.

The Faculties of Engineering & Technology, Art & Design, and Mathematical & Physical Sciences are housed in the Technology Campus. Therefore, all programmes offered by these Faculties are conducted in the Technology Campus.

Similarly, the Gnanagangothri Campus on New BEL Road is home to the Faculties of Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, Hospitality Management and Catering Technology, Management & Commerce, Life & Allied Health Sciences, School of Social Sciences and School of Law and the programmes offered by each of them

No. While MSRIT is an autonomous college under VTU, RUAS is a private university. Both institutions are, however, managed by the same group.
