Overview

The demand for optometrists is increasing at a rapid rate and is expected to rise further in the coming years. According to Career Planner, the employment of optometrists is expected to grow 17% between 2016 and 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. The ageing population, which leads to various vision problems, is the key driver of the increasing demand for optometrists.

The BSc Hons Optometry is a specialised undergraduate programme designed to prepare students for a rewarding career in eye care. The programme focuses on the technical aspects of eye care and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to promote eye health and enhance the quality of life through optimal vision.

BSc Optometry subjects include topics such as ocular anatomy, optics, contact lenses, and visual rehabilitation. The curriculum combines comprehensive theoretical knowledge with extensive clinical training to equip students with the skills required to assess, diagnose, and manage various visual conditions. After completing the programme, graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers as optometrists, providing essential eye care services in clinical settings, private practices, or optical retail environments. Highlights

Proctoral System

Under the Proctoral System, every student is assigned a faculty member as a Proctor or a mentor.

These mentors offer guidance, support and encouragement to students, helping them as they progress along their academic journey. From the choice of electives to their academic performance, from attendance to meeting their credit requirements, students can approach these mentors with any and every query.

Proctors also interact with parents/guardians and keep them updated on the progress of students.

To ensure that they reap the benefits of the Proctoral System, students are advised to be in regular contact with their Proctors.

Innovation Centre

At the Innovation Centre, students team up with faculty members to bring their innovative ideas to life.

Ideas are assessed based on their relevance to and impact on society. These are then translated into working projects that are entered in national and international competitions, and for registration as patents.

Industry Visit:

As part of the curriculum, students will visit a few internationally branded optical industries and gain exposure toward levels of manufacturing and troubleshooting of lenses, with scope for further employment at multinational companies.

Hospital Posting

As part of the curriculum, students are posted to relevant departments of the hospital and gain exposure to the actual working of the department at the organisation. Students, in return, need to prepare a report of their observations and recommendations, preparing them for joining the hospital as soon as they graduate.

Outreach Visit

Students will be posted to community outreach programs and camps on a regular basis. They will get to interact with patients directly, perform necessary examinations, learn to refer in cases of emergencies, and learn the skills necessary to be a successful clinician.
