School dental health program started in 2006 to fulfil the social responsibility of providing free and comprehensive treatment to the government school children. All types of treatment has been provided at free of cost.

To facilitate this program a MoU has been signed with DDPI, Education Department, Govt of Karnataka for both screening and treating the children. A dedicated school van has been assigned with a driver for the program. The school children are picked from the school and dropped back after the treatment.

Free Denture camps are held regularly in Kaiwara rural health centre for the benefit of the patients and students.

The patients will be identified & registered by Government Dental Health Officers,kaiwara, Chinthamani & ChickaballapurTaluk.

Every month 25 complete denture patients identified, will be treated at the camp for 3-4 to days for clinical procedures & 5-7 days for laboratory procedures.

Program Name: Hongirana

“Hongirana Scheme – 2020”

Whereas the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics in collaboration with the Department of Public Health Dentistry, FDS, MSRUAS, are conducting rural outreach service under Hongirana program for patients residing in Kaiwara, Karnataka with the objective of providing orthodontic treatment at subsidized rate including transportation on alternate Wednesday of every month.

Purpose -To provide Comprehensive orthodontic treatment for rural population under subsidized charges.

Inception

This is located in Kaiwara, Chintamani taluk, Kolar district, 75km away from M.S.Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru. It was established in the year 1997.

Target population: Residents from 22 villages in Kaiwara Hobli.

Services provided: Comprehensive oral health care

(Screening for oral diseases, X-rays, Risk assessment, preventive treatment, Extractions, Impactions, Minor surgical procedures, Flap surgeries, GIC , composite restorations, Root canal treatments, Partial removable, fixed prosthesis, Complete dentures, Supra and sub gingival scaling, Root planning)

The center also identifies patients requiring complex treatment and refers to Faculty of Dental Sciences after registration (Patients requiring orthodontic treatment, lasers, bleaching and implants). Free transportation is provided for the referred patients.

Community Based Learning Centre

(a) Post-graduates’ Programme

The post graduate students from Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Pedodontic, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics are provided with opportunity to provide care to patients under the supervision of the Dental Surgeons.

(b) Interns’ programme:

The interns are posted for a period of one month under rural rotatory internship. The interns are trained to see patient as a whole emphasising on patient centred care rather than disease centred care.

Research activities (completed and ongoing):

  • Efficacy of visual examination, LED light & Toluidine blue in diagnosing oral potential malignant lesions among high risk individuals in the field practice areas of M S Ramaiah Dental College and Hospital.
  • Effectiveness of oral health education among community health workers based on Communication – Behavior change model.
  • Association between lifestyle factors and oral potentially malignant disorders- a case control study.
  • The utilization of dental health services was studied among the people visiting the Primary Health Centre, Kaiwara. To assess the utilization of dental health care services among the subjects visiting to primary health centre in Kaiwara.
  • The tobacco users were provided health education to improve their knowledge, attitude and behavior of tobacco users based on their orientation (approach oriented and avoidance oriented) using the Health Belief Model.
  • Comprehensive oral health programme is being conducted for ‘SPANDANA’ a school for special children, Kaiwara.
  • Prevalence of oral potentially malignant lesions and oral cancer in kaiwara- a cross-sectional survey
  • Cost analysis of a peripheral dental unit
  • A Descriptive Analysis of the cases registered in Hospital Based Oral Cancer Registry at outreach centre of Faculty of Dental Sciences (FDS)

  • Prevalence of oral cancer and OPMDs among rural population of Kaiwara, Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka

Significant Accomplishments

  • Establishment of Hospital Based Oral Cancer Registry in 2014 for recording ‘At Risk ‘ patients, Precancerous lesions and oral cancer conditions. The data is being utilized for risk reduction, early detection and prompt treatment and referral for complex cases. The services are now expanded to include tobacco cessation. The data also was utilized for analysing risk factors to initiate region specific interventions.
  • Understanding social determinants and relevant planning strategies: Hullugummanahalli has taken as a model village to understand the association of oral diseases like dental caries, periodontal diseases, and dental fluorosis with social determinants of oral health.

Community Orientation Programme

Introduces students to the community and its cultural, political, economic and environmental determinants of health. It orients students to the community and the way in which the health care delivery system contributes to its structure and function.
