Research Centers at FDS establish collaborative networks and partnerships with other research institutions, both nationally and internationally.

These networks foster collaborative research projects, facilitate the exchange of ideas and expertise, and promote joint publications. Such collaborations enhance the impact of research and broaden the scope of investigations. Two prominent research centers at FDS are the Biomaterial Research Centre – BMRC and Oral Cancer Research Center - OCRC

FACULTY OF DENTAL SCIENCES

Oral Cancer Research Centre

Since its inception in 2015, OCRC has accelerated research in the field of oral cancer and precancer. The centre comprising of Oral Pathologists work in the field of pathogenesis and molecular diagnostics, the team focusses to establish translational oncology research platform with a multidisciplinary approach resulting quality research outcomes.

Work is channelized in collaboration with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine & Radiology, Public Health Dentistry and Life Sciences focusing on surgical management and therapeutic procedures.

Oral Cancer

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the third most common cancer in India and the major risk factors are widely known. Even with the provision of advanced treatment modalities, the morbidity and mortality rates still remain high in India.

The low-income groups in India are affected most due to a wide exposure to risk factors such as tobacco chewing and insufficient exposure to newly diagnostic aids, resulting in a delay in reporting of oral cancer. OSCC patients have high potential for invasiveness through regional lymph node metastasis and recurrence. Exact reasons for recurrence and metastasis are yet unclear. Several factors may contribute to treatment failure, and our primary interest relates understanding the biological behaviour of OSCC at molecular and cellular levels.

Verticals Of OCRC

About

A biorepository or biobank is a center that collects, processes, stores, and distributes biological materials to help support research teams and other professionals in future scientific investigations. The OCRC biorepository helps to manage and contain biospecimens from humans.

Scope

The main purpose or function of the biorepository is to retain biospecimens and their associated data for research purposes. They will ensure and manage the quality, accessibility, disposition, and distribution of all the specimens.

About

AI refers to the ability of a machine to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent human behavior. Including disciplines from both computer science and mathematics. Applications of AI in healthcare include improvement of disease diagnosis and the development of effective therapies

Scope

The significant amount of data generated from cancer patients and theoru tisseu can be used to improve oncologic care. AI and ML can alter disgnostic outcomes, treatment regimes, correction of pitfalls, and future directions in oncology

About

Molecular research includes genomics and metagenomics. Metagenomics is the study of genetic material recovered directly from environmental samples. Genomics invloves study of structure, function, evolution and mapping of genome

Scope

The scope is to monitor disease burden and recurrence. It facilitates prognostic and therapeutic decisions. Genomics enables quick screening of diseases and their diagnosis. It gives an overall view of disease susceptibility

Accreditions and Regulatory Approvals

The Faculty of Dental Sciences offers Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Master of Dental Surgery in all 9 specialities is approved by Dental Council of India, Govt of Karnataka and Govt of India. Doctoral programme is offered in all 9 specialities.

Our Vision

To establish Translational Oncology Research Platform with a multidisciplinary approach.

Our Mission

To advance knowledge in oral cancer through quality research to impact the society.

Research Goals

  • Maintain an extensive Oral Cancer Database & establish a Biobank with high quality & integrity of specimens through ethical transparency to advance the cancer research
  • Accelerate cancer research to develop diagnostic markers for early detection, prognostic and predictive tools and therapies
  • Promote the development of new drugs, devices, and other medical interventions
  • Create unique training opportunities for budding scientists ( PGs, Doc, Post-doc’s ) and encourage new talent to explore basic science research
  • Explore the possibilities to collaborate/MOU with Reputed Private labs, Institutions, Hospitals @National and International levels
  • Gain access to new funding streams to support both institutional and individual projects
  • To drive quality research publications in impact factor journals

Proposed Research work

  • To pursue multidisciplinary clinical and applied research on oral cancer to address the current challenges from local and global perspectives for providing an affordable treatment modality.
  • To explore and adopt validated advanced diagnostic tools at a molecular level to analyse, detect and prevent oral cancer.
  • To investigate the genetic basis of susceptibility of individuals to oral cancer.
  • To analyse the characteristics of specific genetic markers to establish the relationship between the cause, course and progress of oral cancer.
  • To apply the evolving concepts of Pathogenesis and Molecular Diagnostics to research on oral cancer.
  • To disseminate knowledge on concepts and practices of clinical research and treatment modalities in oral cancer.
  • To develop and pursue joint initiatives for collaboration and partnership with Universities, Research Centres and Industries to offer solution to detect and prevent oral cancer.
