The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) was established in 1999 as a part of the Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies.

doce-about

Among the oldest departments of the University, ME strives to achieve excellence in education, academia, industry-oriented research, consultancy work, and service to society.

The Department’s curriculum is developed in collaboration with industry and domain experts. It is designed to be outcome-based and employs innovative teaching methods. A strong emphasis on practical application ensures students get hands-on experience with labs, simulations, and modelling packages. The supportive environment, attentive faculty members, and numerous projects and competitions push students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Over the years, the Department’s focus on research has sharpened to the thrust areas of composite and nano materials, computational mechanics, fatigue life extension, farm machinery design, thermal management, waste handling and recycling systems, operations and supply chain management, and circular economy.

In addition to common core subjects, the Department offers a range of electives that help students sharpen their technical expertise and keep them up-to-date with innovations in the field of electronics and communication. A multidisciplinary approach is promoted and students are encouraged to collaborate with the departments of Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Civil Engineering on research projects.

PG and Ph. D students also undertake research projects at the University’s Techno Centre that give them a competitive edge over their peers. Additionally, students are pushed to take up value added courses, internships, and soft skills programs to contribute to their employability.

Our Vision

The vision of the ECE Department is to become a nationally and internationally leading institution of higher learning, building upon the culture and the values of universal science and contemporary education, and a centre of research and education generating the knowledge and the technologies which lay the groundwork in shaping the future in the fields of electronics and communication engineering.

Our Mission

The mission of the ECE Department is to provide education for those students who are able to compete internationally, able to produce creative solutions to the society’s needs, conscious to the universal moral values, adherent to the professional ethical code, and to generate and disseminate knowledge and technologies essential to the local and global needs in the field of electronics and communication engineering.

Highlights

Proctoral System

Under the Proctor System, every student is assigned a faculty member as a Proctor or a mentor.

These mentors offer guidance, support and encouragement to students, helping them as they progress along their academic journey. From the choice of electives to their academic performance, from attendance to meeting their credit requirements, students can approach these mentors with any and every query. Proctors also interact with parents/guardians and keep them updated on the progress of students. To ensure that they reap the benefits of the Proctoral System, students are advised to be in regular contact with their Proctors.

Minor Programme

An additional program in which students can pursue a study of choice alongside the main degree. Students can register for this in consultation with faculty. This program is for aspirational candidates. Our program offers Electric Vehicles as a minor program and is open to all the engineering students in RUAS.

Innovation Centre

At the Innovation Centre, students team up with faculty members to bring their innovative ideas to life. Ideas are assessed based on their relevance to?—?and impact on?—?society. These are then translated into working projects that are entered in national and international competitions, and for registration as patents.

A Semester Abroad

We offer a program in which students can register a semester in the final year with a partner university, where students can do an internship or a project.

Open Electives

Students can choose from a multitude of open electives across faculties for credits. These are specially designed courses which offer a basic introduction for a holistic development.
