About DoPHD
The Department of Public Health Dentistry is a speciality in dentistry established in the year 1991 concerned with the oral health of the community rather than the individuals.

It also facilitates students’ understanding of the healthcare delivery systems and their operations. Understanding the natural history of disease and planning promotional and prevention programmes accordingly is another area that the student learns. Establishing private dental practice and seeing it from an entrepreneur’s point of view is emphasised. The department strives and works to align with the principle of a learning institution. The postgraduate program is well structured with specific competencies to be achieved in each year. The curriculum is well planned to take students through basic of public health to advanced dental public health aspects. The students are encouraged to use software for statistical analysis. To reinforce this, the students are encouraged to conduct research aligning with the thematic areas of the department. They are given the opportunity to work in community settings for we believe in effective learning with experiential learning.
The department also contributes to the training, service, research and outreach realms of the institution. To this effect, the department has a Centre in a rural area and a comprehensive oral health care unit to meet the requirements of service and outreach. The department imparts training predominantly in community settings providing experiential learning and the future workplace for advanced students. The research areas emphasize providing strategies for oral health promotion in community settings.
