About
As with other departments of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics was established in 2014.
We believe that expertise in Mathematics and Statistics helps strengthen an individual's analytical and reasoning skills. Our aim, therefore, is to help students from different streams and programs build a strong foundation in these subjects through teaching that is accessible, engaging, and student-centric.
Since its inception, the Department has made a conscious effort to evolve its capabilities in academia and research. It offers scholars a rich research environment, actively encouraging students and faculty members to push the boundaries of the fields they operate in.
Interdisciplinary research is given top priority in the Department. Our experienced faculty members - who come from some of the most reputed national and international institutions - are at the forefront of research in the pure and applied branches of Mathematics and Statistics.
In addition to B.Sc (Hons.) and M. Sc in Mathematics, the Department also offers academic research programs like Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) that attract students with varied interests.
These programs are designed to mold scholars into independent thinkers and lifelong learners. They also help create researchers who are comfortable in both academia as well as industry.
Highlights
Student-Centric Education
- Under the Proctoral System, every student is assigned a faculty member as a Proctor or a mentor.
- These mentors offer guidance, support and encouragement to students, helping them as they progress along their academic journey. From the choice of electives to their academic performance, from attendance to meeting their credit requirements, students can approach these mentors with any and every query.
- Proctors also interact with parents/ guardians and keep them updated on the progress of students.
- To ensure that they reap the benefits of the Proctoral System, students are advised to be in regular contact with their Proctors.
Innovation Centre
At the Innovation Centre, students team up with faculty members to bring their innovative ideas to life. Ideas are assessed based on their relevance to - and impact on - society.
These are then translated into working projects that are entered in national and international competitions, and for registration as patents.
Industry Visit
As part of the curriculum, students visit relevant industries and hospitals to gain exposure to the actual workings of various department at organisations. Students will need to prepare a report of their observations and recommendations which will help them prepare them for joining industry when they graduate.
Partner Facilities
The Ramaiah Group was established in 1962 and the teaching hospital for medical students founded in 1985. This hospital caters to various income levels with a wide range of casualties. Students from FPS get exposure to live cases which helps train them for the future.
