Prof. Sanjay K. Roy is Professor, Department of Sociology, North Bengal University for more than 37 years. Professor Roy did his Masters from University of North Bengal in Sociology and Social Anthropology, MPhil and PhD from the Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University, and pursued post-Doctoral research at the University of Sussex (UK) and University of Wollongong (Australia). Had been visiting fellow in JNU, Delhi University and Calcutta University. Had been a Visiting Professor in OKD Institute of Social Change and Development (OKDISCD), Sikkim University and Raiganj University. Prof. Roy has published 57 research articles in Indian and International journals and six books. His areas of interest include theoretical sociology, political sociology, urban sociology, refugee studies, gender studies and Indian tribes. Prof. Roy is the Editor of the UGC CARE listed peer-reviewed journal Social Trends: The Journal of the Department of Sociology of North Bengal University.
Worked as a consultant on the team that (i) prepared a report on “Educational Needs of Children Belonging to SC, ST, Minorities and Special Children” for the SCERT, Govt. of West Bengal; (ii)Worked on the expert team that prepared the Environment Impact Assessment Report on NHPC Hydropower Project in Bhutan (2009); (iii) Worked as a member of the expert team that prepared North Bengal Perspective Plan for the Govt. of West Bengal (2000−2001); wrote the section on Education; (iv) Worked as a member of the team that prepared North Dinajpur District Development Report (2009) and wrote the section on Migration and Resettlement; (V) Headed the expert team that prepared the status report on the Lepchas in Sikkim for the Govt. of Sikkim (2008) for demanding PTG status for the Lepchas.
