Desciption of Grades at Undergraduate Level

O (Outstanding)

  • Exceptional knowledge and understanding of the course and its underlying concepts
  • Critical evaluation/synthesis/analysis and of reading
  • Evidence of breadth and depth of reading to inform development of work
  • Exceptional demonstration of relevant skills;
  • Excellent communication
  • Performance in some, if not all, areas deemed beyond expectation of the level

80.1 - 90

A+ (Excellent)

  • Excellent knowledge of the course as the student is typically able to go beyond what has been taught
  • Evidence of breadth of reading to inform development of work
  • Excellent demonstration of relevant skills
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills

70.1 - 80

A (Very Good)

  • A good breadth of knowledge and understanding of the taught content, very good work characterised by evidence of wider understanding of the course as the student is typically able to relate facts/concepts together with some ability to apply to known/taught contexts
  • Identification and selection of material to inform development of work
  • Very good demonstration of relevant skills
  • Demonstrates good communication skills

60.1 - 70

B+ (Good)

  • A good breadth of knowledge and understanding of the taught content and able to make meaningful synthesis and demonstrates good analytical skills
  • Uses set material to inform development of work; addresses all aspects of the given brief
  • Good demonstration of relevant taught skills
  • Communication is competent and shows clarity

B (Above Average)

  • A good breadth of knowledge and understanding of the taught content and able to make meaningful synthesis and lack good analytical skills
  • Uses set material to inform development of work; addresses all aspects of the given brief
  • Demonstration of relevant taught skills
  • Communication is competent

C (Average)

  • Knowledge and understanding is sufficient to deal with terminology, basic facts and concepts but make some meaningful synthesis
  • Relies on set material to inform development of work
  • Adequate demonstration of relevant skills over a limited range
  • Communication/presentation is generally competent but with some weaknesses

40 - 50

P (Pass)

  • Knowledge and understanding is just sufficient to deal with terminology, basic facts and concepts and fails to make meaningful synthesis
  • Naively follows set material in development of work
  • Adequate demonstration of relevant skills over a limited range
  • Communication/presentation shows limited clarity and coherence

Below 40

F/Ab : Fail or Absent

  • Insufficient knowledge and understanding of the course and its underlying concepts
  • Ignores set material in development of work
  • Given brief may be only tangentially addressed or may ignore key aspects of the brief
  • Fails to demonstrate relevant skills
  • Communication shows no clarity, poor presentation, incoherent


As a student moves from 1st year to fourth year, the expectation levels of knowledge and understanding, cognitive skills, practical skills and transferable skills are ramped.
